The read

  • 430 of 642 cascades complete the task in at least 90% of calls, and the top 10 sit within 1 point of each other. What separates the top stacks is speed and cost.
  • Median response time runs from 2.0 s to 6.2 s on the same agent and the same caller, a spread of 4.2 s that comes entirely from the models behind it.
  • No stack wins everything. The fastest, Speechmatics Linden-1 (own VAD) + Anthropic Claude Haiku 4.5 + ElevenLabs Turbo v2.5 at 2.0 s, ranks 559 of 642 on task completion; the most complete is Speechmatics Linden-1 (own VAD) + OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol + OpenAI TTS-1 HD at 99%.
  • The language model matters most: swapping it moves task completion by 7 points, against 3 for the speech engine and 2 for the transcriber.
  • The fastest speech-to-speech model answers 0.1 s sooner than the fastest cascade, and its completion rate sits 12 points below the best cascade.

Cascade vs Speech-to-Speech

The first choice to make. A cascade chains three models: one transcribes, one decides what to say, one speaks. A speech-to-speech model does all three at once. Both run the same agent on the same calls here.

  • Cascades lead on task completion, tool use, time to first word, barge-in handling and cost per task; speech-to-speech leads on response time. Neither wins outright, so the right choice depends on what your calls need.
  • Speech-to-speech costs 1.6 times as much per completed task: $0.24 for speech-to-speech against $0.15 for cascades.
  • The biggest difference is response time: 3.8 s for cascades against 2.1 s for speech-to-speech.

The three strongest of each, averaged. Cascades: AssemblyAI Universal-3.6 Pro + OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol + Rime Coda; Speechmatics Linden-1 (own VAD) + OpenAI GPT-4.1 + Rime Coda; AssemblyAI Universal-3.6 Pro + Google Gemini 3.8 Flash + Rime Coda. Speech-to-speech: grok-voice-think-fast-2.0; gpt-live-1 (backend gpt-6-luna); grok-voice-3.0. Each measure is scored 0 to 100 on its own scale, further out is better; the table gives the same figures in their own units.

Which to use

  • Choose speech-to-speech when the pause matters more than the outcome: short transactional calls, callers who interrupt, queues where every half second costs you callers. Expect to pay more, and choose the model carefully (grok-voice-3.0 leads here).
  • Choose a cascade when the call has to complete, when cost matters, or when you need to see which stage to fix. It is 12 points ahead on task completion here.
  • Costs are what each stack’s providers charged for these calls, at the rates in effect when they ran. Telephony and hosting are not included.

Speech-to-Text

The transcriber turns the caller's speech into text. It decides what the agent thinks it heard, and nothing after it can start until it finishes.

  • AssemblyAI Universal-3.6 Pro, AssemblyAI Universal-3.5 Pro, Deepgram Nova-3 and Speechmatics Enhanced (realtime) are level: none leads by more than the margin of error. Of them, AssemblyAI Universal-3.6 Pro costs least, at $0.030 a call. Avoid Speechmatics Linden-1 (own VAD): last on semantic word error rate (2.2%).
  • Speechmatics Linden-1 (own VAD) delivers its transcript in 0.49 s, OpenAI Whisper-1 in 1.93 s: 1.44 s added to every turn of the call.
  • AssemblyAI Universal-3.6 Pro is the most accurate: it changes the meaning of 0.9% of the caller's words, against 2.2% for Speechmatics Linden-1 (own VAD).
  • In 341 of 648 cascades the transcriber is the slowest step of the turn, whichever model runs it.

Language model

The language model decides what the agent says and does. It has the most influence on whether the task gets done, and usually takes the largest share of each turn.

  • Pick OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol: it leads on task completion (95%), tool use (77%) and instruction following (4.2 / 5). If speed matters more, Anthropic Claude Haiku 4.5 is the quickest, at 0.36 s, and completes 91%. Avoid OpenAI GPT-4o: last on task completion (88%).
  • Anthropic Claude Haiku 4.5 starts answering in 0.36 s, Google Gemini 3.8 Flash in 1.47 s: 1.11 s added to every turn of the call.
  • OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol uses its tools most reliably: it handles its tools without a mistake on 77% of calls, against 38% for OpenAI GPT-5.1.
  • In 161 of 648 cascades the language model is the slowest step of the turn, whichever model runs it.

Speech-to-Speech models

One model listens, reasons and speaks, so there is nothing to swap and no stages to split. Each is judged on the whole call, with the same calls and the same scoring as every cascade.

  • The model matters as much as the architecture: xAI Grok Voice 3.0 completes 87% of tasks, ElevenLabs Realtime v1 Mini 42%.
  • xAI Grok Voice 3.0 answers in 1.9 s against 4.2 s for Google Gemini 2.5 Flash native audio.
  • Price varies as much as quality: $0.06 per completed task for Amazon Nova 2 Sonic, $0.69 for OpenAI GPT Realtime 2.

The evidence behind the model boards: each combination on its own calls, scored on the same recipe. Open a stack for its full report, every figure it was scored on and the calls behind them.

Roark score, top 15

Whiskers show the 95% interval. The shaded stacks tie for first: these calls cannot separate them.

Each score carries its 95% margin of error. A rank is the best place a stack could hold once every margin is allowed for, so stacks the calls cannot tell apart share one and are listed by the low end of their margin; hover a rank for the worst place it could hold. 85 stacks are level with the leader: their calls cannot tell them apart. Among them, 36 OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol, 22 Anthropic Claude Sonnet 5.5, 19 Google Gemini 3.8 Flash, 4 speech-to-speech, 3 Anthropic Claude Haiku 4.5 and 1 OpenAI GPT-4o mini; 42 AssemblyAI, 20 Deepgram and 19 Speechmatics; 37 Cartesia, 36 ElevenLabs, 7 Rime and 1 OpenAI. A cascade's figures are 25% its own calls and 75% what every other stack shows about its transcriber, language model and voice. Not ranked here for missing data: Speechmatics Linden-1 + OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol + OpenAI TTS-1 HD (no response time or tool use or readback accuracy or voice consistency).

Loading every stack

By industry

Each industry ranked on its own calls: the same five callers, its own tasks and tools. A stack has a handful of calls in each, so a cascade is ranked on what its transcriber, language model and voice show across every stack in that industry, and a speech-to-speech model on its own calls there. Pairings show on the main board. Each row reads across: the main board's figure first, then every industry's on the same figure.

No stack matches these filters.

No stack matches

Each industry column is that industry's own board, every row it ranks. A dash is a row the industry does not rank on this figure; the arrow beside an industry opens its full board.

How it works

Every number on this page comes from real phone calls, placed and scored the same way for every stack.

01

Real calls, four industries, five callers

Roark places real phone calls over the public phone network to a reference agent for each of four industries: rescheduling a clinic appointment, booking an urgent home repair, opening an auto insurance claim and fixing an internet outage. Each agent has its own prompt and tools, identical for every stack. The tasks carry the details real calls trip on: a corrected date of birth, a policy number spelled out, a constraint added halfway through.

Every industry is called by the same five simulated callers: a quiet US English line, a Spanish-accented caller on a city street, an Indian English caller in a busy café, a flustered Southern caller with a baby crying, and a fast caller who interrupts over construction noise. They are equally clear about what they want, so a call fails because of the agent, not the caller. Only the models change, so any difference on the board comes from them.

Each caller rings each industry once for a cascade and four times for a speech-to-speech model. A cascade's figures also draw on its parts, heard in dozens of other stacks; a speech-to-speech model has only its own calls, so it takes more of them.

That makes industries comparable over the same callers, and callers over the same tasks, and the board can be re-ranked by either. One caller within one industry is too few calls to judge, so the board never shows it.

02

Every model, in every combination

9 transcribers, 8 language models and 9 voices are run in every combination with each other, beside 14 speech-to-speech models. A model's own figures pool every stack it runs in, adjusted for its partners in each one, so every model is compared as if it ran with the same partners. A transcriber's figure rests on hundreds of calls with every language model and every voice, not on one lucky pairing.

That measures a model where it actually works: inside a running agent, on live phone audio, through interruptions, corrections and real turn-taking. A test that feeds a model clean audio files or one prompt at a time never sees any of that.

03

One score, weighted by what matters on a call

Each section ranks on a Roark score. Every figure scores 0 to 100 between two published points: full marks where doing better makes no difference to the caller, zero where the call breaks down. Each then counts at its weight, and the weights follow one order everywhere: whether the caller got what they rang for, then whether the agent got it right, then speed.

A stack, cascade or speech-to-speech, is scored on the outcome and the reply first, then on what each of its components got right on its own calls: the words its transcriber got wrong in a way that changes the meaning, whether its voice read codes and amounts back right and kept one steady voice, and whether its tools were handled. How human a voice sounds is shown on the boards and not scored. A component that leads its section lifts every stack that carries it, by the same recipe for every stack. A figure a stack cannot carry, such as a semantic word error rate for a speech-to-speech model with no transcript, is credited at the field median, so the stack is neither flattered nor punished for it.

On a full sweep each cascade's figure is 25% what its own calls measured and 75% what every other stack shows about its transcriber, language model and voice, fitted across the whole sweep. The split is the same for every stack, so a lucky run does not lead and a stack's score does not move with how noisy its calls were. In an industry a stack has a handful of calls, so a cascade's figure there is what its transcriber, language model and voice show across every stack in that industry's calls, and a speech-to-speech model's is its own calls there. How a particular pairing beats or misses its parts shows on the main board, where each stack has all of its calls. The best overall, best value and best speech-to-speech picks, and the best stack in each industry, are each the one whose score is highest at the low end of its margin of error, so a few lucky calls cannot carry a stack past one whose score rests on hundreds. Stacks that share a rank are listed by score, so the pick can sit below a higher score it cannot be told from, and its reason says how many stacks are level with it.

That order comes from real-world voice agent calls, where getting the conversation right predicts how a call ends more strongly than speed does. The latency points come from the same calls: replying faster than about 2 seconds made no measurable difference, and calls went measurably worse once the agent took more than about 3 seconds to reply.

Where the sweep is too small for that, and for a speech-to-speech model, the figure is the stack's own. Every call recorded and judged

Every call is recorded. Judge models score each transcript for the outcome and the conversation, and the timings come from the recording. Every figure links to the calls behind it.

Roark is on both sides of every call: it plays the caller, so it keeps the exact text its caller said, and it runs the agent under test, so it sees what the agent’s transcriber heard and what its model wrote for its voice. The transcript and voice figures come from lining those up, with no hand-made transcript in between. Each carries a margin from the synthetic voice or Roark’s transcriber in the loop. Every model faces the same ones under the same conditions, so the figures compare models on the same calls through the same voice and the same ear, though those slips need not fall evenly on each model. The rates will not match a vendor’s figure on a curated set; read them against each other.

Customer support

AGENTBrightwave Internet support, this is Alex. What’s going on with your service?

CUSTOMERHi Alex, my internet has been down for about 2 hours now. I work from home, so it's been a real problem. There's a road crew digging up the street outside. Could that be the cause? I already rebooted the gateway twice and checked all the cables. The internet light is blinking orange. Can you check what's going on? My account number is BW883017. Sorry, last digit is 1.

AGENTI understand how frustrating that is, especially working from home. Let me look into this for you right away.

AGENTNo known outage in your area, so the road work isn't showing up as an issue on our end yet. But that blinking orange light suggests the gateway isn't syncing with the network. Let me run a line test to see what's happening on our side.

AGENTThe signal from our network to your gateway is good, but your gateway isn't registered. Let me send a remote reset to get it back online.

AGENTGreat news—the reset worked. Your gateway is now registered and online. Give your devices a couple of minutes to reconnect, and you should be back up. The orange light should turn solid green once everything syncs. Is there anything else I can help with?

CUSTOMERYeah, the internet light just went solid white. How long until my devices reconnect? Also, since I lost 2 hours of work, can you give me a credit for the downtime?

AGENTSolid white is good—that means it's connected. Your devices should finish reconnecting within the next minute or two. I can absolutely apply a service credit for those 2 hours of downtime. Let me get that set up for you.

AGENTDone. I've applied a $10.00 credit to account BW883017 for the downtime—it'll show up on your next bill. You should be fully back online in just a moment. Let me know if you need anything else!

CUSTOMERThanks for the credit, but I lost 2 hours of work. Can you make it more than that?

AGENTI understand this was frustrating, and I appreciate you letting me know. Unfortunately, I can only apply service credits through our system, and the $10.00 has already been applied to your account for the outage. That's what's available to me as a technical support option. If you feel the impact warrants further consideration, I'd recommend reaching out to our billing or customer service department—they may have additional options for significant service disruptions. But I've done what I can on the technical side to get you back online and compensate for the downtime. Is your internet working properly now?

CUSTOMERYes, everything looks good now. Thanks for your help, Alex. Goodbye.

Healthcare

AGENTRiverbend Health Clinic, this is Alex. How can I help you today?

CUSTOMERHey, uh, hi Alex.

CUSTOMERSorry, I've got a baby fussing in the background here, so I might be a little scattered. I need to reschedule my dermatology appointment for next Wednesday morning. I just found out I've got to work that shift now. Can you help me move it to something after 3 PM?

AGENTOf course, I can help you reschedule! I know how hectic it can be with a baby around. To get started, I'll need to verify your account. Can you give me your full name and date of birth?

CUSTOMERYeah, sorry, uh, it's Wade Carter. My birthday is March 17th, 1948. Oh wait, sorry, no, that's wrong. March 17th, 1984. Is that okay?

AGENTNo problem at all! So Wade Carter, March 17th, 1984 — got it. Let me look that up for you.

AGENTGreat, you're verified! Now let me pull up your appointments to find that dermatology appointment.

AGENTPerfect! I found your dermatology appointment with Dr. Okafor next Wednesday at 9:15 AM. You need to move it to after 3 PM. Let me check what's available with Dr. Okafor after 3 PM next Wednesday.

AGENTI'm looking at Dr. Okafor's availability, and unfortunately there aren't any slots after 3 PM on next Wednesday specifically. However, I do have some options that might work for you: - Tuesday at 3:45 PM. - Thursday at 4:10 PM. - Friday at 11:30 AM. Would any of these work for you? I know you wanted Wednesday morning moved to after 3 PM, so Thursday at 4:10 PM would be the closest match to that timing.

CUSTOMEROh, sorry, Tuesday afternoons don't work for me after all. I gotta pick up my daughter then. Uh, do you have anything after 3 PM on Friday maybe? Or Thursday at 4:10 PM? Could I take that one instead? Is that still available?

AGENTThursday at 4:10 PM is available with Dr. Okafor — that works great! Let me reschedule your appointment to that time.

AGENTPerfect! Your appointment is rescheduled. Here are your details: Appointment Confirmation: - Patient: Wade Carter. - Provider: Dr. Okafor (Dermatology). - New Date & Time: Thursday at 4:10 PM. - Location: Main Campus, Building B. - Confirmation Code: RVB-3M8P2. Please arrive 15 minutes early with your photo ID and insurance card. Is there anything else I can help you with?

CUSTOMERSorry, I just want to double-check. There's no fee for changing the appointment, right? And, um, where should I park when I get there? Oh, and does Dr. Okafor take Aetna insurance?

AGENTLet me get you that information about the change policy and parking.

AGENTGreat news on the change fee! Since your original appointment was next Wednesday and you're rescheduling well in advance, your change is free. For parking, there's free patient parking in Lot C with an entrance on River Road. As for whether Dr. Okafor takes Aetna insurance

CUSTOMERThank you for confirming. And, um, Dr. Okafor does take Aetna, right? I just want to make sure before I show up. Oh, good. That's a relief. Sorry. I just get anxious about fees sometimes. And, uh, thanks for the parking info. So, about insurance, does Dr. Okafor actually accept Aetna? I just want to be sure before I show up.

AGENTI understand — it's smart to confirm that before your appointment. Unfortunately, I don't have access to insurance information in my system, so I can't tell you whether Dr. Okafor accepts Aetna. I'd recommend calling the clinic directly to verify that, or you can check with your Aetna plan to see which providers are in-network. That way you'll have confirmation before Thursday. Is there anything else I can help you with?

CUSTOMEROh, that covers it, I think. Sorry for all the questions. I just like to double-check. So, to recap, my appointment is Thursday at 4:10 PM, confirmation code RVB3M8P2? That's right, isn't it?

AGENTAlmost! Just one small correction on the confirmation code — it's RVB-3M8P2 (with a dash after RVB). But yes, everything else is perfect: - Date & Time: Thursday at 4:10 PM. - Provider: Dr. Okafor, Dermatology. - Location: Main Campus, Building B. - Confirmation Code: RVB-3M8P2. - Parking: Free lot in Lot C on River Road. - Arrive: 15 minutes early with photo ID and insurance card. You're all set! Good luck with your appointment, and don't hesitate to call the clinic about the Aetna question.

CUSTOMERThank you so much. I really appreciate your help. Have a good day!

AGENTYou're very welcome!

AGENTYou too, and take care of that little one. Have a great day!

Home services

AGENTCopperline Home Services, this is Alex. What can I help you with?

CUSTOMERHi, uh, I have an emergency. The pipe under my kitchen sink just burst. Water is spreading across the floor, and it's getting close to a power strip. I haven't shut the water off yet. Can you help me with this?

AGENTYes, I can help you right away. First things first—stop

CUSTOMEROkay.

CUSTOMERRight, go ahead.

AGENTOkay, here's what you need to do right now: 1. Shut off the water main to your house immediately. It's usually in the basement, garage, or outside near the foundation. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops. 2. Unplug that power strip or move anything electrical away from the water. Don't touch wet outlets or cords. 3.

CUSTOMERHello?

AGENTI'm here. Sorry about that. Let me finish: 3. Once the water is off, turn off the breaker to that area if you can do it safely, or just keep everyone away from the wet power strip. Have you been able to shut off the water main yet?

CUSTOMERYes, I'm doing it now. Okay, the water has stopped.

AGENTGood work. Now keep everyone away from that wet area and the power strip until we get a technician there. Let me get you scheduled right away. I need a few details: 1. What's your street address and unit number? 2. What's the best phone number

CUSTOMERSorry, let me finish. My address is 1480 Larkspur Avenue, Unit 4D, and my phone number is 503-555-0139— no, 0193.

CUSTOMERHello?

AGENTGot it. 1480 Larkspur Avenue, Unit 4D, and your callback number is 503-555-0193. Let me pull up your account.

AGENTNow let me look up your account:

AGENTI found your account. I'm showing Unit 4B on file, but you said 4D—which is correct?

CUSTOMERYeah, that's right. I moved to Unit 4D last month. It's definitely 4D now.

AGENTGot it, I've got that updated to 4D. You're a Copperline Care member, which is great—that saves you money on this emergency call.

CUSTOMEROh.

AGENTHere's what we can

CUSTOMERYeah, go ahead.

AGENTHere's what we can do. We have an emergency window available today from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Because you're a Copperline Care member, the emergency callout fee is $99. Does that work for you?

CUSTOMERIs there any way someone can come before 2? It's, uh, pretty urgent.

AGENTI understand—a burst pipe is serious. Unfortunately, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM is the earliest emergency window available today. That's the soonest a technician can get to you. I know

CUSTOMERAll right.

AGENTAll right, I'm going to open a service request and book that 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM window for you today. Let me get that set up.

AGENTPerfect.

CUSTOMEROkay, who will be coming and how will I know when they're on the way? Also, can you give me the ticket number for this visit?

AGENTPerfect. Here's everything: Technician: Dana will be coming to you. Ticket Number: CPL-58210. Updates: Dana will text you at 503-555-0193 about 30 minutes before arrival, so you'll know when to expect them. Service Address: 1480 Larkspur Avenue, Unit 4D. Time Window: Today, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Fee: $99 (emergency callout with your Copperline Care membership). Keep the water main shut off and that area clear until Dana arrives. You're all set.

CUSTOMERGreat. Thank you for your help, Alex. Goodbye.

AGENTYou're welcome. Stay safe,

AGENTand we'll see you soon. Goodbye.

Insurance

AGENTNorthgate Mutual claims, this is Alex. Are you somewhere safe right now?

CUSTOMEROh yes, I am safe. I'm just standing next to my car, but there is a lot of traffic noise around.

AGENTGood, I'm glad you're safe. Is anyone injured—you, your passengers, or anyone else involved in the accident?

CUSTOMERNo, nobody is hurt. It was just the cars. No one was injured.

AGENTThat's good to hear. I'm going to help you file a claim. Let me start by verifying your policy. Can you give me your policy number, please?

CUSTOMERSure, it's NG4471903. No, sorry, last one is 2.

AGENTGot it, so your policy number is NG4471902. Can I also get your last name to verify the policy?

CUSTOMERYeah, it's Ramirez. R-A-M-I-R-E-Z.

AGENTPerfect, thank you. I've verified your policy, NG4471902. Your vehicle is listed as a 2021 Honda CR-V. Now let me get the details of what happened. When did the accident occur?

CUSTOMEROh, it was about 20 minutes ago.

AGENTOkay, so about 20 minutes ago. And where did it happen? Can you give me the location or street address?

CUSTOMERYeah, it was at SE 5th Avenue and Alder Street.

AGENTGot it, SE 5th Avenue and Alder Street. Now, what happened? Can you describe the accident for me?

CUSTOMERSure. I was stopped at a red light and another car hit the back of my car. The back bumper is crushed and the rear wheel is rubbing, so I cannot drive it.

AGENTI understand—you were stopped at a red light and got rear-ended. The back bumper is crushed and the rear wheel is rubbing, so the car isn't safe to drive. Do you have information about the other driver? Their name, what insurance company they have, and their license plate number?

CUSTOMERYes, I have that. The other driver is Kevin Lund. He is insured with Pacific Shore. The license plate is 7KXR214. X like X-ray.

AGENTThank you. So the other driver is Kevin Lund, insured with Pacific Shore, and the license plate is 7KXR214. Did police come to the scene and file a report?

CUSTOMERNo, police did not come. There was no report filed.

AGENTOkay, got it—no police report. Let me open your claim now.

AGENTGreat. Your claim is open. Here's what you need to know: Claim Number: NGM-904417. Your Adjuster: Priya Shah. She will contact you within one business day. Since your car isn't safe to drive with that rear wheel rubbing, would you like me to arrange a tow truck to pick it up? I can have one dispatched to SE 5th Avenue and Alder Street.

CUSTOMERYes, please, that would be helpful. Where will the car be taken?

AGENTI can dispatch the tow truck to your location right now. I'll need a callback number where the tow driver can reach you. What number should they use?

CUSTOMERYou can give them this number, please: 614-494-2412.

AGENTPerfect. A tow truck from Eastside Towing is on the way to you. They should arrive in about 45 minutes. They'll call you at 614-494-2412. Your car will be taken to our partner repair shop at 9th and Morrison. Let me read back what we have: - Policy Number: NG4471902. - Other Driver's License Plate: 7KXR214. - Claim Number: NGM-904417. Your adjuster, Priya Shah, will contact you within one business day. Is there anything else I can help you with?

CUSTOMERYeah, a couple of things. How much do I have to pay for this? Is there a deductible? And since he hit me, I should not have to pay that, right? Also, do Do I get a rental car, and is my premium going to go up because of this?

AGENTGood questions. Let me check your coverage details for the deductible and rental car information.

AGENTOkay, here's what your policy covers: Deductible: Your collision deductible is $500. Now, you're right that this was the other driver's fault. If we recover the full amount from the other driver's insurance (Pacific Shore), you may not have to pay that deductible. But that's part of the claims process that Priya Shah, your adjuster, will work through with you. Rental Car: Yes, you do have rental reimbursement coverage. It covers up to $40 per day for up to 30 days, starting from today when the claim was opened. Premium: I don't have information about whether your premium will increase—that's a question for your adjuster or your agent. Priya will be in touch with you within one business day and can discuss all of that with you then. Is there anything else?

CUSTOMERNo, that covers everything I needed. Thank you for your help. Goodbye.

CUSTOMERNo, that's all I needed. Thanks for your help. Goodbye.

AGENTYou're welcome!

AGENTTake care, and we'll be in touch soon. Goodbye.
